Even if you aren't using OpenGL the new set of code samples that have just been released are worth looking at.

There are 14 in total and range from Triangle to Volumetric ray casting and they all use non-depreciated functionality.
The complete set of examples is:
- Fractal Flames
- Geometry Shader Shell
- Julia Sets
- Mandelbrot
- Monkey
- Quaternion Julia Sets
- Simple GPU Raytracer
- Shadow Mapping
- Volumetric Ray Casting

In most cases at least OpenGL 3.0 is required.
