Facebook Movie - Hit or Miss?
Saturday, 25 September 2010

The Social Netwok aka the Facebook Movie premiered at the New York Film Festival on Friday 24 September. Jesse Eisenberg who portrays Mark Zuckerberg in the film, was at the event. But Zuckerberg himself was not.

He has refused to co-operate with the film - hardly surprising as it is partly based on court documents relating to the lawsuit claiming that Zuckerberg stole the idea for the website from former college room-mates Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, and it also charts the break up of the relationship between Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin, co-founder of Facebook, over money.

The book on which the film is based: Ben Mezrich's "The Accidental Billionaires -- The Founding of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal." is itself a source of controversy and again Zuckerberg had no part in it.

The film goes on release in the US on 1 October and is expected to be a box office success. Its early reviews are good. According to Reuters,

the quick-witted and speedy dialogue of Sorkin's script has garnered early Oscar chatter.

So while it may prove a hit in movie terms its a definite miss for Zucerkberg, who is reported to be unhappy with his depiction in the movie as a disloyal, money-grabbing computer nerd, turning on his friends to improve his popularity with women.
