New Ruby Website Now Open
New Ruby Website Now Open
Written by Alex Armstrong
Wednesday, 19 June 2013, the official website of the Ruby community has been revamped and has switched from a private CMS to an open process so that every Rubyist can help to maiintain it.

In a post announcing the "brand-new" site, Jean-Denis Vauguet explains the need for the revision:

Ruby’s official website has stalled over the years, leading to a situation where only a subset of the available languages were actually maintained. Still, their content may not even be relevant in the current Ruby ecosystem. Something had to be done! A few rubyists thus gathered to build a whole new contribution platform, switching from a private CMS to an open process.

The important featuer of the new is that is editable by its users on a Github repository. Anyone who want to edit, fix or update something needs to create an account on Github and can then contribute to maintaining or creating content. All changes or submissions will be reviewed by a member of the editorial team and edits will either be merged if approved or contributors will be notified and given feedback.

The idea of treating the website like a wiki so as to share the work out between lots of contributors sounds promising. And the use of Github to make this an approved process ensures that inexperienced, or even malicious, users cannot introduce substandard content or wreck the site.
