Google has added a number of features to Data Studio, the reporting and dashboarding element of its Analytics suite.

Data Studio comes in free and commercial versions, and can be used to connect to all your data with native integrations across a range of Google products, as well as non-Google data.

Both free and commercial versions can be used to create reports from data from AdWords, Google Analytics, YouTube, BigQuery, Attribution 360 and Google Sheets.

The data control is the first addition to Data Studio. The developers say it eliminates the need to create separate reports and data sources for your various Google Analytics views. In practical terms, the data control it displays a list of all the pre-defined Analytics views that have been defined and are available. So long as you've designed a report  of the right format, and there's a similarly formatted view available, the two can be combined using the data control.

There's a video explaining the new feature:

Filter controls are another new element. Filters give report viewers a way to slice data by specific segments, and have been available in previous versions. The problem arose when a lot of filters were available, as users found them difficult to look through. The developers have now added a search feature within the filter component, making it easier to find and select or deselect specific items. There's also now a single select option so you can filter a report on a single value. When the report is created, you can configure the filters to allow for single-selection only

Combo charts are another improvement. These let users create a line chart with a non-time-based dimension on the X-axis. In earlier releases, you could only set up line charts with time-based dimensions. The new component can plot a single dimension with up to 5 metrics, or 2 dimensions with a single metric.

Finally, the new version lets you define reports containing tables that have clickable links. When a user clicks on the link, they will be redirected to to relevant content outside the report. As you'd expect, the reports need to be based on a data source containing a column of URLs. Data Studio will detect this column and assign it to the URL field type.
