Docker has announced an upgrade to Docker Desktop with improvements including a new Dynamic MCP feature. The open packaging technology of Docker lets you run an app without the need to install files on which your app depends on the system it is running on. Instead, your app gets its own operating system environment packaged with it.
As its name suggests, Docker Desktop is desktop application that developers can use to build, run, and manage containerized applications on their local machines. There are versions for Linux, Windows and MacOS. Docker Desktop provides a GUI designed to simplify the complex setup of a local development environment. It includes tools such as Docker Compose and the Docker daemon. The improvements to the new release of Docker Desktop start with better integration of Docker Debug. This is now free for all users, and the Dockerfile debugger in the VSCode Extension can be used by developers to step through build processes directly within the editing environment. The developers say that for Windows-based enterprises, Docker Desktop's ongoing engineering investments are delivering significant stability improvements with WSL2 integration, ensuring consistent performance for development teams at scale. The new experimental Dynamic MCP lets AI agents discover and add MCP servers on-demand during a conversation, without manual configuration. Instead of pre-configuring every MCP server before starting your agent session, clients can search the MCP Catalog and add servers as needed. The new capability is enabled automatically when you connect an MCP client to the MCP Toolkit. The gateway provides a set of tools that agents use to discover and manage servers during runtime. The improvements to MCP support also mean developers can now securely connect to 60+ remote MCP servers, including Notion and Linear, using built-in OAuth support. The Docker MCP Catalog now includes over 270 MCP servers, with support for more than 60 remote servers. The Docker team has also added one-click connections for popular clients like Claude Code and Codex. Docker Desktop 4.5 is available now.
