Play Google's AI Drawing Guessing Game

Google has developed a game that uses machine learning to guess what you're drawing. Be warned, Quick Draw is a pastime that will hook you in.

The idea of Quick, Draw! is you get 20 seconds to draw a doodle of a bear, a phone, an ice cream or whatever you like and the program attempts to guess what you're drawing.

The results varied between being impressively good at recognition, through to downright insulting - how the heck did it think my soccer ball was a fish? And as for categorising my drawing of underwear as being of a wristwatch, I'm definitely not impressed.

The online instructions explain that this is a game built with machine learning. The instructions are that:

“You draw, and a neural network tries to guess what you’re drawing. Of course, it doesn’t always work. But the more you play with it, the more it will learn. It’s just one example of how you can use machine learning in fun ways.”

It's interesting to see the algorithm at work; when I was attempting to draw a bear, it first guessed teddy bear before deciding it was in fact a bear.

There's obviously matching to the correct answer, because once it's guessed the 'right' thing, that challenge ends. Some of the guesses were made within two or three seconds (ice cream, for instance). You can see the game in action here:

Be warned, it's annoyingly addictive, and you could waste a lot longer than you imagine either being flattered that your drawing skills are so great, or irritated that it failed to recognise your masterpiece.
