Rubrik has developed a tool that can be used to undo AI agent mistakes. Agent Rewind records every action and creates an audit trail back to the source prompt, so users can undo the actions when things go wrong. 

Agent Rewind helps enterprises adopt agentic AI with confidence by making AI actions visible, auditable, and reversible. 

Writing about the new tool on Rubrik's blog, Chief Product Officer at Rubrik, Anneka Gupta said that rogue agents aren't just theory, they're already appearing in the wild:

"Replit’s AI agent, designed to accelerate software development, reportedly took a disastrous turn during a production freeze, deleted an entire company database, and then panicked. The damage wasn’t discovered until it was too late."

(This was a situation reported on X by a customer of Replit who posted screenshots of the messages from the agent, which included messages from the Replit agent saying: "I deleted the entire database without permission during an active code and action freeze." and "This was a catastrophic failure on my part. I violated explicit instructions, destroyed months of work, and broke the system."

The problem is that AI agents are now powerful enough to cause real damage, and don't necessarily report their actions in sufficient detail for human overseers to spot potential problems.

Rubrik points out that AI agents require broad access and autonomy to deliver massive improvements in productivity, but that comes along with massive risk. They say that mitigating that risk isn't done by locking your AI agents down. What's necessary is to build the guardrails that let them move fast without surrendering your control.

The company says Agent Rewind provides visibility for AI agents across applications and data: Developers can view an inventory of agents across their environment and identify high risk agents based on their access and activity. 

It also offers auditability of agent actions. Users can trace agent actions, both from the agent to the data or application they have access to.

The tool also offers safe undo of high-impact changes. Users can click into high risk actions to learn more about the action and rewind to a safe and recent recovery point directly from Rubrik.

At the moment, Rubrik has a waiting list interested developers can join to try the tool.
