MOOC provider eDX will shortly be celebrating its second anniversary with a livestream event on Twitter. Meanwhile a new course on embedded systems that emphasizes their cyber-physical nature of has just begun.

In May 2012 MIT and Harvard announced their joint venture to provide deliver "near-term course offerings" from both institutions. UC Berkeley joined the initiative shortly afterwards and the first courses on the platform were rolled out Fall 2012. Other universities have since joined in and edX now has over 150 courses from 34 global universities which as charter members of its consortium.

May 6 saw the start of EECS149.1x Cyber-Physical Systems
a course on embedded systems that takes as a major theme:

the interplay of practical design with formal models of systems, including both software components and physical dynamics.

The 6-week course is an online adaptation of the UC Berkeley undergraduate course EECS 149, which introduces students to the design and analysis of computational systems that are integrated with physical processes. It features a virtual lab with autograder in which students will program mobile robot to achieve a specified task.

Meet the three instructors Sanjit Seshia and Edward Lee from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Univ of California, Berkely and Jeff Jensen, a Senior Product Manager for Real-Time Systems at National Instruments who explain what they mean by "cyber-physical systems" and what to expect from the course:

Prerequisites for the course include basic programming experience in C or C++ and knowledge of underlying processor and memory abstractions. Its the workload is estimated at 8-10 hours per week - and you need to join in quick as it is already underway.
