Pinterest is showing signsof letting third party developers use its API and has opened a Pinterest Developer site. At the moment it is only for US developers whom Pinterest approves.

During the last year Pinterest was the biggest climber in the social networking space seeing a 97% growth in users. Founded in 2010, Pinterest acts as a personalized media platform. It is free website that requires registration to use. Users can upload, save, sort, and manage images, known as pins, through collections known as pinboards and can interact with other users.

Up until now there has been no developer access to the Pinterest API although Pinterest, which is otherwise free of advertising, has enabled businesses to use it for marketing purposes, something which has proved a commercial success.

Announcing the launch of Pinterest Developer on Pinterest's Engineering blog, Josh Inkenbrandt, explained:

On Pinterest, people have saved over 50 billion Pins. As a developer, you’ll have the chance to build something that makes those Pins a reality, like apps for ordering ingredients from a recipe Pin or booking trips based on travel Pins.

When Pinners sign in to your app with Pinterest, you can:

  •  Build a personalized, curated experience based on their boards and Pins
  • Let people easily create multiple Pins or boards to get more of your content distributed across Pinterest

As Pinners choose which topics they are interested in, this sounds like a good opportunity to reach a well defined audience. However, Pinterest is proceeding with caution by limiting access to developers it has whitelisted and initially only considering applications from US developers.
