iRobot is best known for its Roomba range of robot vacuums, but it also builds defense robots. The 110 FirstLook is a throwable robot that can now poke its nose into things that might be dangerous.

The 110 FirstLook started out as a throwable reconnaissance robot. You throw it through a window or over a wall and it rights itself and sends back pictures of what you want to examine. The standard unit has four cameras, IR illumination an 8x digital zoom. It isn't particularly new - released in 2011 - but now it has some significant upgrades in the form of some add-on payloads.

It  weighs in at only five pounds (2.4kg), making it easy to throw, but now it can carry some attachments that make it possible for it to examine what it finds. A small arm can be attached which can be used to move lightweight objects and there are chemical and bio sensors plus a new thermal camera.

It can survive 16 foot drops and water to a depth of 3 feet. Its battery keeps it going for six hours and the self-righting mechanism can be used to climb over curbs and steps. Its spec sheet says that it can also be used to carry charge deployment accessories - think planting bombs etc.
