Amazon Strengthens Data Offerings

Amazon has announced a number of updates to its data services on AWS, including fully managed MariaDB.

The news was announced at the Amazon re:Invent 2015 event that was held in Las Vegas this month, where Amazon made a number of other data related announcements. The MariaDB service on AWS comes with up to 6TB of storage, 30,000 IOPS, and support for high-availability deployments through the Amazon Relational Database Service. The addition means that you can use Amazon RDS to deploy scalable MariaDB databases without worrying about tasks such as backups, software patching, monitoring, scaling or replication. Amazon RDS for MariaDB is available in all commercial regions.

Amazon also announced AWS Database Migration Service, which you can use to migrate existing databases to AWS. The service supports “all widely used database platforms”, including Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL. The service supports homogeneous migrations such as Oracle to Oracle, as well as heterogeneous migrations between different database platforms, such as Oracle to Amazon Aurora or Microsoft SQL Server to MySQL. There’s a schema conversion tool that converts the source database schema and code, including views, stored procedures and functions, to a format compatible with the target database. Any code that cannot be automatically converted is marked for you to deal with later. AWS manages data type transformation, compression, and parallel transfer (for faster data transfer) while ensuring that data changes to the source database that occur during the migration process are automatically replicated to the target.

The next two services to be announced also deal with getting data into and out of AWS. Amazon Kinesis Firehose can be used to load streaming data into AWS. It can capture and automatically load streaming data into Amazon S3 and Amazon Redshift. Redshift is Amazon’s service that you can use to set up data warehousing solutions that make use of existing business intelligence tools. Amazon S3 is the Simple Storage Service for highly-scalable object storage. Kinesis is a fully managed service that can batch, compress, and encrypt data before loading it. You create a Firehose delivery stream from the AWS Management Console, configure it with a few clicks, and start sending data to the stream. The service can be used with hundreds of thousands of data sources where the data should be loaded continuously to AWS.

If your data is at the Petabyte-scale, Amazon has a solution in the form of the AWS Import/Export Snowball, a new addition to improve the existing AWS Import/Export service that uses secure appliances to overcome long transfer times and security concerns.

The way it works is that you create a job in the AWS Management Console and a Snowball appliance will be shipped to you. You attach the appliance to your network, transfer the files to the appliance, and send it back.
