The final release of Visual Studio 2013 Update 2 is ready to download with support for universal apps, TypeScript, and tools for working with web apps and Azure.
The release is available either as an ISO on its own, or with a single install that includes Visual Studio 2013 RTM and all the features in Update 2.
The support for universal apps means you can now build apps that can run on Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 alongside Android and iOS, and you can also share code and assets through shared projects. Microsoft says you should be able to re-use 90 percent of your app code when moving from one target device to another.
Writing on his blog, S. Somasegar said that the partnership with Xamarin means C# and Visual Studio developers cam target additional mobile devices including iOS and Android:
“Developers using Xamarin and Visual Studio can create native apps taking advantage of the underlying device, with the great productivity of C#, and sharing code and libraries between their iOS, Android and Windows applications.”
The improvements for web development add SCSS support, a new JSON editor, updated ASP.NET templates, and an improved URL picker. Azure support has also been improved with options to create websites and SQL Azure databases directly on Azure. The final main improvement is to the diagnostics, with better performance events that let you navigate to user code for MVC Methods or jump to the SQL command for database queries.
Update 2 is available as an ISO or from the Visual Studio Downloads page.
