Amazon has released Nova Forge, a new service that developers can use to build their own frontier models using Nova. Nova Forge customers can start their development from early model checkpoints, blend their datasets with Amazon Nova-curated training data, and host their custom models securely on AWS. Nova is a set of foundation models and services from AWS designed for generative AI apps that can generate text, images, audio, and synthetic data in response to prompts. Nova has models for different purposes such as low cost, high accuracy, and browser-based. Nova is integrated with Amazon Bedrock, Amazon's fully managed service with tools for building with generative AI on AWS. Amazon says the advantage of Nova Forge is that it allows the developer to start model development from early checkpoints across pre-training, mid-training, and post-training phases. AWS is taking a different route, inviting enterprises to build their business context directly into the models that will run their applications and agents, as its CEO Matt Garman explained in his opening keynote at the company's re:Invent show this week. Third-party models don't have access to proprietary data, he said, and building models with that data from scratch is impractical, while adding it to an existing model through retrieval augmented generation (RAG), vector search, or fine-tuning has limitations. But, he asked, "What if you could integrate your data at the right time during the training of a frontier model and then create a proprietary model that was just for you?" Users can blend their own data with Amazon Nova-curated data throughout all training phases, and can run the training on Amazon SageMaker AI. The Nova Forge team says this data mixing approach significantly reduces catastrophic forgetting compared to training with raw data alone. Nova Forge developers can also use reward functions for reinforcement learning (RL), so the model can learn from feedback generated in environments that are representative of the eventual proposed use. It also supports the use of an orchestrator to manage multi-turn rollouts, so can be used for RL training for complex agent workflows and sequential decision-making tasks. The service also includes a built-in responsible AI toolkit to configure the safety and content moderation settings of the model in terms of safety, security, and handling of sensitive content. Nova Forge is available now.
