An award winning-effect in this video showcases haptic augmented reality - being able to touch the virtual objects that are overlaid on top of the real scene.

This is a promo video, a puff piece for Magic Vision Labs at the University of South Australia, but it is also a showcase for what augmented reality is all about and what you might be able to do with it. The focus here is on haptic AR - being able to touch the virtual objects that are overlaid on top of the real scene.

Watch the video and see what augmented reality systems are all about. Later you discover how haptic motion feedback devices map out the shape of the virtual object. If nothing else take a look at the burning hands - scary... and it won an award.

The idea of mapping VR generated textures with slight modifications to shape is something that you can do with minimal additional hardware.

And the reason it is called "Magic Vision" is the inspiration of the quote:

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"

Arthur C Clarke
