JetBrains has launched its new productivity tool called Space, an integrated team environment and all-in-one collaboration solution that covers software development, project/team management, and communications. As such it's a direct competitor to Slack and Microsoft Teams amongst others.

Judging from this comment from Maxim Shafirov, JetBrains CEO, it started out as a tool designed for JetBrains itself:

“JetBrains started as a company of developers but now 40% of our team represent different creative roles: designers, marketing, copywriters, and others. We’ve built Space so we could still work together as one team and we believe other companies will benefit from it as well.”

However, it tries to diversify itself from the competition aiming to become the only tool that covers all business processes, from chats and PM tools to the entire software development pipeline. Further down the line, JetBrains is going to add modules for other roles like marketing and legal, therefore offering a single environment for the entire company. The productivity gain is that users can focus on their work with minimal distractions and context switching. Here's a quick overview of what's on offer:

As for the sudden announcement of its availability, that didn't come out of the blue. Space way in the making long before  December 2019 when it was first launched as an early access program, receiving more than 35,000 requests from companies in different industries. Since then until yesterday's official launch, the team behind Space has been integrating all the requested parts to the product - chats, meetings, calendars, issues, mobile apps and more.

Installation wise, it is currently available as SaaS on Jetbrains cloud infrastructure, with clients for both desktops (Windows/ Linux/ Mac) and mobile (iOS and Android). An on-premises versions, which you'll be able to host on your own hardware or private cloud, is planned for the near future.
