GitHub has just announced the GitHub MCP Registry, a new home base for discovering and building with MCP servers. Truth is that since MCP came in the limelight, there's been tons of MCP servers for any task imaginable coming out daily. Of course, since most MCP servers are stored on Github anyway, the Registry also points to their GitHub repositories so that you can get the code and examine what it does, or even extend its functionality. The Registry integrates deeply with the original remote GitHub MCP Server that was launched recently, to offer enhanced security guardrails and authentication, deeper integration with the Copilot coding agent, and expanded support across daily GitHub workflows. Due to that integration you can bring the context of the MCP server of choice directly into Copilot. Actually in our "Three Tools To Run MCP On Your Github Repositories" we've covered (pre-GitHub Remote MCP Server) how you could use MCP to interface from a MCP host like Claude desktop with a MCP server which in turn would connect to a live Github repo and call the appropriate tools in order to satisfy the user's query. One such tool talked about out was GitMCP which creates a Remote MCP server for any GitHub repository; just change the domain from github.com or github.io to gitmcp.io and get instant AI context for any GitHub repository. But now with the launch of the official Github MCP server have those tools become now obsolete? In summary the Registry's key features:
For the time being there's just 39 MCP servers hosted, the likes of Azure, Neon, Elasticsearch etc due to the vetting, but more are being added daily. The ultimate goal is for developers to have a single, trusted environment to find the right tools faster and contribute to a more open, interoperable ecosystem on GitHub.
