AI and Data for the Web

As well as influencing the world we live in, the Internet itself is being shaped by the latest technologies and we have looked at some titles that reflect this.

Algorithms of the Intelligent Web

Authors: Haralambos Marmanis & Dmitry Baenko
Publisher: Manning
Pages: 368
ISBN: 9781933988665

Mike James gave this book the maximum 5-star rating because of its excellent and practical coverage of AI for the web. while noting that readers would benefit from having a prior knowledge of statistics. Mike said that if you are looking for an introduction to the way that some basic AI techniques can be applied to the web then this is a good place to start, as it provides good accounts of searching with Lucene, similarity measures, clustering and classification.

He noted that even if you know the basics of any of these you will probably learn something because the book presses on into slightly more specialised and practical issues such as combining classifiers, bagging and boosting and even explains significance testing. Mike concluded:

"If you are interested in bringing some intelligence to the web then this is the book to read. Highly recommended."

Interactive Data Visualization For The Web

Author: Scott Murray
Publisher: O'Reilly
Pages: 272
ISBN: 9781491921289

This is a book written for web developers wanting to use the D3 JavaScript library, and Kay Ewbank rated it at 4.5 stars, noting that the book started life as a set of online tutorials posted on Murray’s website, and much of the material in the book can be viewed there. The book does contain new material, along with 78 percent more bad jokes (or so Murray promises).

Kay's conclusion was that the book is well written and while it’s code dense, the descriptions are easy to read and understand. The title has now been updated with an updated and expanded second edition.

Scalability Rules

Author: Martin L.Abbott & Michael T. Fisher
Publisher: Addison-Wesley
Pages: 272
ISBN: 9780321753885

The preface to this book states that "it is meant as a primer, a refresher and a lightweight reference manual to help engineers, architects and managers develop and maintain scalable Internet products".

Awarding it 4 stars, Alex Armstrong said How valuable you find this book depends on your prior knowledge and skills but while each rule is stated in a simple manner there is in-depth discussion around each which will be of interest even to experienced developers. There's an updated second edition printed after our review appeared.
