jQuery Top JavaScript Framework

JavaScript Frameworks are a boon to any working programmer but which one should you use? Here's an infographic that can help you decide.

JavaScript Frameworks are a boon to any working programmer but which one should you use? It would be nice if there was a single official framework but there isn't and there probably never will be. In the meantime a good rule of thumb is to go with the majority - i.e. use the de facto "standard" framework.

This infographic from  WebAppers  provides a wealth of data on framework usage. The main message is that jQuery is a long way ahead of the others and so probably deserves the right to be considered first and only passed over if you have a pressing reason to use one of the other frameworks. It also suggests that learning jQuery is going to be a good investment.

Another fact emerges from this data; programmers don't update their frameworks as often as they could. In all cases older versions tend to be more used than the latest ones. This probably reflects the fact that once you have a website up and running using a particular version of a framework then the smart thing to do is to leave things alone - don't fix it if it isn't broken.

One final surprise is that the strangely unfashionable MooTools framework has a second biggest share, even though it gets little attention and publicity and is almost never listed as a possible choice to a beginner. The reason is probably that it is the default framework used by the Joomla! CMS and so is probably more a reflection of Joomla!'s popularity.
