Google has revealed more details of its plans to release a version of Android for PCs. The information came during the keynote session at the recent Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit that took place in Maui, Hawaii, September 23-25. There have been rumors that Google has plans for Android for PCs for some time, but from the chat during the keynote it seems that things are much more advanced than had previously been revealed.
Sameer Samat, the President of Android ecosystem at Google, said Google is "taking the ChromeOS experience, and re-baselining the technology underneath it on Android," continuing that the company is super excited about it for next year. This puts a firm timeline on the technology. The progress towards a product release was backed up by the CEO of Qualcomm, who was taking part in an onstage conversation during the keynote with Google's SVP of Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh. Osterloh said: "In the past, we've always had very different systems between what we're building on PCs and what we're building on smartphones. We've embarked on a project to combine that. We are building together a common technical foundation for our products on PCs and desktop computing systems." "This is another way we can leverage all of the great work we're doing together on our AI stack, our full stack, bringing Gemini models, bringing the assistant, bringing all of our applications and developer community into the PC domain. I think this is another way in which Android is going to be able to serve everyone in every computing category." Amon then responded, saying: "I've seen it, it is incredible. It delivers on the vision of convergence of mobile and PC. I cannot wait to have one." The update at the conference provides further clarity following an interview in Tech Radar in July during which Samat said: "we're going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform." Samat then "clarified" what he meant on a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying this was just a reiteration of what was announced in a blog post in 2024: "we’re building the ChromeOS experience on top of Android underlying technology to unlock new levels of performance, iterate faster, & make your laptop + phone work better together." The live stream of the conference keynote is available on the Qualcomm Website. More InformationRelated Articles
