Ubuntu has announced App Showdown, a competition with a tight deadline. The challenge is to create an entirely new app from scratch, preferably using the Quickly framework.

As we reported at the time,  Ubuntu launched its own app portal last September. Now Ubuntu's App ShowDown is a contest with the overall objective of promoting Ubuntu as a target for app developers.

The rules for the competition are very simple:

  • The contest starts on June 18, 2012
  • You have 3 weeks to develop a new app before the closing date July 9, 2012
  • You must submit the app to the Software Centre

Initially the rules specified that you had to to use Quickly to create your app. Now that rule has been relaxed and while you are recommended to use Quickly and GTX you can use the toolkit of your choice.

At the end of the contest, a jury will vote on the submitted apps, which are invited from and the winners for the Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes will be announced.

The prizes are:

Gold - System76 Gazelle Professional laptop and Nokia N9 phone

SIlver - System76 Lemur Ultra laptop and Nokia N9 phone

Bronze - Nokia N9 phone

Three further Nokia N9 phones will go to the top 3 apps determined by community vote.

If you are looking for inspiration for an aapp there's a community initiative to share ideas, visit the UbuntuShowdown Subreddit.

More Information is available on the Ubuntu App Showdown site and if you want to know about Quickly here's a quick introduction:
