Android OS History

This is a really useful infographic. Print it out. Stick it on a wall and you will always know when each Android OS version hit the market and what it brought to the table.

There have been so many versions of Android - can you remember what Apple Pie looked like? 2008 looks such a long way off from here.

The infographic below is a useful reminder of the history of Android prepared by Vijay web  solutions.

Despite it often being said that Android fragmentation is a problem in practice it isn't such a downside. There are only a small number of screen sizes that you really need to support and targeting Honeycomb gets you most of the facilities and most of the market - and yes the market share indicators on the infographic are wrong.

The correct figures are:

2.2 Froyo 0.6%
2.3.3 -
2.3.7
Gingerbread 9.8%
4.0.3 -
4.0.4
Ice Cream Sandwich 8.5%
4.1.x Jelly Bean 22.8%
4.2.x 20.8%
4.3 7.3%
4.4 KitKat 30.2%

A more irritating problem is the way that Android has evolved into something of a mess. The support library now seems to be needed even for version of the OS that have direct support for the features, mostly anything to do with Fragments, you are using and many some new features are not natively supported by the OS.
