This year's Imagine Cup Worldwide Finals take place in St. Petersburg Russia and Microsoft has recruited Matt Smith, aka Dr Who, to host the awards ceremony which will be streamed live online.

This year's Imagine Cup has more than one million dollars in prizes at stake and all the student teams that have made it through regional contests are being flown to Russia to take part in the final five days of competitions, the common theme of which is to use technology to tackle the tough problems facing the world today.

Who better to understand the challenges than Dr Who, the Timelord who has been solving the world's tough problems for millennia with the help of technology that is both unbelievably sophisticated, the Tardis, and also disarmingly simple, his Sonic Screwdriver?

This trailer also shows that Matt Smith, the current Dr Who in the TV series that is now watched on a worldwide basis, understands Microsoft's aims of motivating kids and young people to do amazing things with technology and have fun while doing it.

The projects that will win this year's prizes are bound to be creative and inspiring and having Dr Who announce the winners just gives one more reason to tune in on July 11th.
