Apple's main addition in the second beta of iOS5 is Wi-Fi syncing with iTunes 10.5. In addition the fonts in text messages have been improved.
When the Apple first unveiled the iOS 5 Beta, Business Insider pointed to its new features that can be considered as having been "ported" from other platforms. Six are copies of Android features:
- Notifications appear as a bar at the top
- Wireless syncing
- Tabbed browsing
- Customized split keyboard on iPhone
- Ability to open apps from the lock screen
- Receive updates over the air without syncing to a computer
while a seventh comes from BlackBerry:
- iMessage allowing iOS users to communicate in real time
In another article Steve Kovach lists seven features still missing from iOS 5 that he hopes might be included before its release later this year
- Third-party widgets
- Better voice control
- Better multitasking
- FaceTime over 3G
- More support for AirPrint
- Better Google Maps app
- An easy way to return apps you don't like
So is the current verdict on iOS 5 that the cosmetic improvements are awesome, it adds some good functionality that brings it into line with Android and BlackBerry but there's still work to be done?
