Tuesday, 30 December 2014

A new repository browser and code review tool has been released by JetBrains. Upsource 1.0 has until now been available in beta, but is now RTM.

As reported back in August, the tool can be used with code in Git, Mercurial, Subversion and Perforce repositories. You can work with multiple repositories, both internal and externally hosted such as GitHub, from Upsource’s central location and what JetBrains says is a friendly UI.

Upsource lets you keep track of code changes, with options to navigate to specific revisions, and to inspect diffs inline or side-by-side. Other options let you track recent commits, branches and merges, or search the project history to learn who did what and when.

You can also work with any revision of your code base and view code in earlier states without having to check it out locally. There’s a discussion option so you can discuss code and changes with teammates, and create code reviews on individual revisions or entire branches.

Upsource also has an option to let you use code insight in Java projects. This means you can work as though you were using IntelliJ IDEA while actually working in Upsource, and make use of code inspections when reading or reviewing code in Java projects. You can also search for usages and navigate to symbol declarations.

The final option lets you share links to code. You can specify URLs that link to everything in code, including revisions, branches, code reviews, diffs, discussions, reports, search filters, files, or even selections in code.

Here Hadi Hariri of JetBrains presents three short videos. The first two cover browsing repositories and code review respectively while the third quickly reviews both these topics and more.

Once downloaded, Upsource sets itself up in a free 10-user pack version. Commercial options are available for more users.
