XAML Studio has been made open source thanks to help from the .NET Foundation which has adopted it as a seed project. XAML Studio enables developers to rapidly prototype UWP XAML by previewing and adjusting XAML in real-time before copying it over into Visual Studio.
The software was developed by Michael Hawker, a senior software engineer on Microsoft's scale and incubation team. Hawker has worked on the project from the start, and says it was always envisioned as an open-source project. Originally know as XAMLPad, work on XAML Studio has until now been carried out in Microsoft Garage, the company's experimental projects division.
XAML Studio is a developer tool for WinUI developers using XAML. It lets users rapidly prototype ideas before integrating them into their app within Visual Studio. It provides a variety of tools and helpers specifically for XAML based development including live edit and interaction; a binding debugger, and a data context editor. The tool offers Auto-save and restore documents, a documentation toolbox, and IntelliSense. It also has alignment guides and namespace helpers. Things have been very quiet on XAML Studio since the release of version 1.1 in 2019, but behind the scenes work has continued both on the development and the move to open source it. Now it is available on GitHub, and Hawker says version 2 is still in active development, and can be built from source from the GitHub repository. Version 2 adds a new Fluent UI design, and folder support with image loading and design data loading. There's a live Property Panel that can be used to edit, inspect, and experiment with properties, as well as having Visual Tree and Visual State explorers. Other new Quick Access Preview options include Refresh, Alignment Grid, Clipping, and Theme Toggle. There's also a breadcrumb XAML Navigation Bar. XAML Studio is available now on GitHub.
