Google has introduced Androidify, an app that can be used to build your own Android bot on the web or in an app on Google Play. AI does most of the work - all you need to do is upload a selfie, or write a prompt, and add some accessories. The Android mascot, commonly known as Bugdroid, has suffered many cruel fates over the years. It was mounted on a green broom in a nod to Wicked; been an Oreo super hero, and been part of a garage band filming a music video. Now there's an app that works either in your browser or as an Android app that turns photos into versions of the bot. Google did launch an app last year that let you take the bot and add your own clothing and accessories. This latest incarnation goes further. Androidify takes a photo that you provide and uses Gemini 2.5 Flash to add a caption, and Imagen to generate the custom Android bot. If you want more, Veo 3, Google's latest video generation model can be used to animate your bot with "different vibes". This feature only works on Fridays this September, though presumably it will be offered for some inducement after that. The features vary on Android phones and the website; on the phone we were offered different backgrounds, while on the web browser we got accessories such as crowns, rollerskates, golf clubs and dogs. Androidify uses the Firebase AI Logic SDK to access Google's Gemini and Imagen models . Once Gemini Flash has decided you've provided a clear, focused person (it rejected the office cat and dog, species-ist), the model generates a detailed caption of the image so it returns a specific JSON format. This is then used to enrich the prompt for the final image generation. A specifically fine-tuned version of the Imagen 3 model is then called to generate the custom Android bot avatar based on the enriched prompt. The app also has a "Help me write" feature which uses Gemini 2.5 Flash to create a random description for a bot's clothing and hairstyle, adding what the developers call a bit of a fun "I'm feeling lucky" element. Androidify is available now.
