The Windows Phone launch has begun, rather later than suggested in our previous news headline Windows Phone 7 to launch on October 11. It is true that there was a launch event on that date but today is the more significant launch - when real customers can buy real Windows Phone 7 handsets.

Other countries where devices are due to be available today are Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and the UK and Ireland.

There are some notable omissions in this list.

A comment to the announcement on the Windows phone blog reads:

Sorry guys, not a good start for a new OS on this market. In Germany, no provider can deliver the phones until the 3rd November

and blog itself notes that the date for arrival in the US, presumably the biggest and most significant share of the market, is November 8th.
