October is with us and October is the main month for DevFests although November has almost as many and there are still some to come in December. You might be surprised how many events there are this year.

DevFests are community-led developer events hosted by Google Developer Groups around the globe. GDGs are focused on community building and learning about Google’s technologies.

Last November we reported on Google's First Ever DevFest OnAir, an online DevFest featuring sessions from DevFest events around the globe and while that had the benefit of letting you share the Google-originated content and participate in a live Q&A forum from your own desk or armchair it wasn't the same as attending a local event.

For 2019 there are some 400 DevFest events taking place around the globe all of which focus on the latest technologies:

If you want to find a DevFest in your own area take a look at the interactive map of events for 2019.

The blue pins are for events taking place in October, green is for November and orange for December - those in grey have already taken place.

The DevFest site notes:

DevFests may cover multiple products such as Android, Firebase, Google Cloud Platform, Google Assistant, Flutter, machine learning with TensorFlow, and mobile web. Events may include speaker sessions, hackathons, codelabs, study jams, and trainings with speakers from Google, Google Developers Experts, Women Techmaker Ambassadors and speakers from other companies.

However, as each event is organized by the local chapter of Google Developer Groups they vary in format. Looking into some of the events taking place in October some are limited to fewer than 50 places while others can cater for over 200 attendees. There are wait lists already for some events so let's hope they can find a way to expand their size before the event takes place.

If you haven't participated in this type of event before it seems like a great way for coders to get together. For example, the one UK event slated for this month, taking place in Reading on October 26th courtesy of the Reading & Thames Valley GDG, promises:

You will have a chance to meet local technology companies, developers and researchers focusing on Cloud, mobile, web and AI all in a friendly and engaging forum.

Noting:

We are working hard to bring you a super lineup with talks from introductory to intermediate from local and international speakers at the top of their game! There will be swag and a chance to win some fab prizes!

One thing these free-to-attend events seem to have in common is the chance to hear developers talking about the things that matter to them and the opportunity to meet and talk with other developers.
