Microsoft has become the first corporate partner of MOOC provider edX. Enrollment is now open for seven courses taught by Microsoft experts that will start in the next few weeks.
Programming with C# is the topic of another 6-week course, starting on April 7th, which again requires experience of another programming language.
March 31st is the start date for the first of three-course series on Building Cloud Apps with Microsoft Azure. Aimed at intermediate level this is a 4 week (16 hour) module that sets out to walk you through a patterns-based approach to building real-world cloud solutions.
Querying with Transact-SQL is another 4 week course and is for database professionals and developers working with SQL databases. It starts on April 14th and:
takes you from your first SELECT statement to implementing transactional programmatic logic through a combination of expert instruction, demonstrations, and practical labs.
Although you can gain a free Honor Code certificate by completing any of these courses, if you want a Verified Certificate of Achievement there is a fee of $90.
The final edX/Microsoft course to be announced is Windows PowerShell Fundamentals, a 5-week (10-20 hours) course starting on April 14th on the edX Professional Education platform for which a fee of $200 is required.
The idea of having computing MOOCs taught by Microsoft experts is going to appeal to lots of those who have already tried the edX platform and is also likely to attract more people to this form of online education.
