Hone Your SQL Skills With The Premier League
Friday, 02 May 2025

Introducing sqlpremierleague,  another sql playground, but with puzzles specific to sports.

Learn SQL as a beginner or hone your SQL as an experienced
developer by working on real datasets from sport competitions.
These include the English Premier League, the IPL, the NBA, the NFL, Formula 1, UCL, and two dedicated to L.Messi and C.Ronaldo.

If your are a fan of any of those, you'll certainly have fun doing the puzzles and at the same time learn more about your favorite competition. No matter the league you choose, there's challenges everywhere which when you complete you gain XP which then you can liquidate in future challenges in order to get hints when things get difficult, as well as to climb the leaderboard.

To put it to test, I chose the English Premier League and set to do a few puzzles. A few examples of those are:

  • Which team has won the most away matches in Premier League history?
  • Get the total number of matches played in the Premier League.
  • How many matches ended with more than 5 total goals?
  • Get the first and last match date for each Premier League season.
  • Get the average number of goals per match in the Premier League.

I set to do number 1 of that list. Getting into it, you are presented with the schema which is a single denormalized "epl_matches" table that contains all the information necessary. Next to it, you'll find the playground where you test and run your queries and submit them when confident that you've found the solution. For this puzzle, the sql required to solve it was:

Nice and easy; next one "Get the first and last match date for each Premier League season."

and so on.

The platform's free plan however has just the Easy puzzles unlocked; to proceed with more complex ones you've got to pay $9.99. Saying that the free ones are plenty to play with, but if you like it that much maybe then consider upgrading to pro.

The stats as far as the English Premier League I checked, for season 2024/25 are up to date till Sunday 23 Feb 2025. As such they're a few months back. If they were more recent you could for instance use the stats to help you in betting better.

Betting better would be the third advantage of getting involved with the platform after honing your SQL skills and learning more about the Competition itself. The last advantage would be that gaining experience in this kind of stats could potentially land you a job, just like Arsenal was looking for a data analyst with SQL skills. Check the job posting

To conclude, familiarity with SQL goes a long way. Do not count out old tech in order to adopt the latest and shiniest; old tech might be just timeless. Therefore the significance of SQL playgrounds like this (check SQL Squid below too) extends beyond mere entertainment.....
