Microsoft To Close Dev Home

Microsoft has announced it is 'retiring' Dev Home, and moving " a subset of its features" to new places. The closedown will happen in May 2025.

When Dev Home was previewed back in 2023, Microsoft described it as a new control center for Windows that makes it easy to connect to GitHub and configure cloud development environments like Microsoft Dev Box and GitHub Codespaces.

Dev Home provided a way to monitor projects in a dashboard using customizable widgets, and let developers configure their dev environment by downloading apps, packages, or repositories, connecting to developer accounts and tools (such as GitHub), and creating a Dev Drive for storage.

Dev Home was open source, and was essentially an effort on Microsoft's part to make Windows 11 more appealing to developers. It never really gained traction, and the reaction on social media to the fact it is closing was muted, with most responses to the news of the closure pointing out that while it sounded like a nice idea, Microsoft didn't do enough to develop Dev Home any further. Perhaps they assumed that the open source community would take over.

Reacting on Reddit to the statement that parts of Dev Home will move a subset of features, BredzPro suggested that this probably means it will be renamed to "DevHome Copilot 365 (Previously Dev Home)."

Dev Home's problem is mainly that it doesn't add anything that serious developers haven't already got a simpler way to do using other tools.

DevClass never moved on from its preview, and has never had any new features added to it since the original preview launch. Now the Dev Home documentation has a message that it will be 'going away' in May.
