KitKat has been slow to take off but Google's latest figures, show that it has achieved 13.6% adoption, representing a more than 50% increase in usage over the previous month and an almost eight-fold increase since February 2014.

Figures on the Android Developer site provide information about which devices are active in the Android and Google Play ecosystem, which means it is restricted to Android 2.2 and higher.

The latest figures, in the table above, show that while Jelly Bean, Android 4.1 through Android 4.3, is still the firm favorite it has slipped to having less than a 60% share. Between them the three versions of Jelly Bean were on 58.4% of Android devices in the week ending June 4, 2014.

Both Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread have been in gradual decline over recent months and each lost just over 1% between May.

KitKat on the other hand has been gaining ground. Last time we reported on it, Android 4.4 had a meagre 1.8% share of the pie chart, only half a percent ahead of Froyo. Since then Froyo's share has shrunk to 0.8 and KitKat's has surged to 13.6% putting on 5.1% during the past month.

For reference here is February's breakdown:

You can see that June's pie chart looks very different:

So while KatKat might not have inspired Android users to rush to upgrade, as new users come to the platform and existing users replace their devices it will gradually gain an increasing share just by virtue of being the latest generation,
