MongoDB Stitch Makes App Development Easier

A new back end for MongoDB has been announced. MongoDB Stitch has a document-centric API that handles the interface between apps and back-end data.

The backend as a service (BaaS) was announced at this year's MongoDB World. The API can be used for database operations and service integrations, and includes access controls.

Eliot Horowitz, CTO of MongoDB said that where developers create apps based on services, until now developers have still had to tie the services together: This is the area MongoDB Stitch is designed to manage. MongoDB Stitch provides developers with a way to handle all routine tasks such as working with their data, controlling data access, and orchestrating commonly used services such as authentication, payments, and messaging.

The Stitch API comes with a number of pre-built integrations with their well known services including Google, Facebook, AWS, Twilio, Slack, MailGun and PubNub. Additional cloud or microservices can be added using the Stitch HTTP service. It comes with native SDKs for JavaScript, iOS, and Android.

The team at MongoDB say apps developed using the API still gain the full power and scalability of MongoDB. The current version can be used with new or existing MongoDB Atlas clusters, but will be expanded to other MongoDB databases.

Stitch presents a single API to the MongoDB database. The MongoDB Atlas database service and the other service integrations are handled by MongoDB Stitch, It also makes it easier to share existing MongoDB data with new apps, as it takes care of exposing your selected fields from an existing database to a new application.

The new API is initially available in public beta release with the cloud database service MongoDB Atlas.
