Oracle has launched Advanced Analytics for R modeling language as an alternative to using external analytical servers.

Advanced Analytics is a combination of Oracle's R Enterprise and its Data Mining module that can be used for predictive analytics, data mining, text mining, statistical analysis and advanced numerical computations inside the database. This way of working provides an alternative to using external analytical servers. Results from Advanced Analytics will also be available for analysis in Oracle's BI suite and the Exalytics In-Memory appliance.

Oracle R Enterprise gives R developers the means to use R tools and scripts transparently against data stored in Oracle Database 11g. Oracle Data Mining will be removed as a separate option in view of its inclusion as part of Oracle Advanced Analytics. The data mining algorithms, analytics, and access to Oracle OLAP cubes will instead be available for use within the R language.

R started life as a statistical modelling language for academics, but has seen increasing use in analysis within large IT projects as an alternative to SPSS or SAS, and Oracle is adding support for R to a number of products. It announced the Oracle Big Data Appliance at OracleWorld last October which, in addition to Hadoop and Oracle NoSQL, also includes an open source distribution of R.
