Microsoft has announced a new Graph API usage report in a beta API version in Microsoft Graph. Microsoft Graph lets organizations map the relationships between people, information and activities within the organization, and can be used to integrate data from Microsoft services into developers own apps. It is designed to be a unified API endpoint for accessing data, intelligence, and insights coming from the Microsoft cloud. Developers can use REST APIs or SDKs to access the data and build apps. The usage reporting API provides information on Microsoft Graph API usage for the tenant. The API will also provide information about the API usage for individual applications. The developers say that Microsoft Graph has a very large surface area covering many different APIs, with different calling patterns, for different Microsoft services. In recognition of this the team has created groups of APIs called service areas. These represent sections of common functionality delivered by Microsoft Graph, roughly the same as the underlying products. The service areas in the beta are Microsoft Exchange, Teams calling, Teams messaging and Teams presence. The plan is to add additional service areas over time. Announcing the beta, Microsoft said that many companies have existing reporting solutions that use a reporting application or web portal. The reports API can be used to incorporate Microsoft 365 usage data into the existing reporting solution so that all IT service reports are in a unified location. The reports API can be used to work with the data that's available in all usage reports, including organization-level summaries per service, entity-level (user, sites, accounts) usage information for the last 7/30/90/180 days, and daily activity aggregates. It can also be used to analyze Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) application activity and configuration, and to monitor application sign-ins. The authentication methods usage reports show how users in an organization use Microsoft Entra capabilities, such as self-service password rest and multi-factor authentication (MFA). These reports can help determine which authentication methods are more successful for the organization and what types of errors end users are experiencing. The Microsoft Graph API usage report can also be used to find out how frequently applications access Microsoft Graph APIs.
