Held from 15 to 17 August, the inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games has taken place in Beijing. Over 500 robots came together to compete in sports like boxing, football and table tennis, perform dance and martial arts and tackle specific challenges such as sorting medicines.
While the majority of the robots at the World Humanoid Robot Games were from China teams from over 16 countries, including the United States, Germany, and Brazil, competed. While no visiting teams were awarded Gold medals Germany's HTWK Robotics+Nao Devils team took the Silver in the 5v5 football final, after losing 1-0 to China's Tsinghua University's Hephaestus team, losing 1-0 in the final. The standout performer in track and field events was the Unitree HI which took Gold in the 1500-meter race with a time of 6:34.40 and in the 400-meter race with a real stopwatch time of 1:23.03.
It also took gold in the 100-meter hurdles, aka Steeplechase, which is shown in this video: We have already reported on a series of events prior to this one which shared the aim of highlighting China's focus on the robotics industry and its broader ambitions in AI and automation. The strategy appears to have been successful in that a report from Morgan Stanley noted a surge in attendance from the general public at a recent robot conference, indicating that not just government officials but also the public has embraced the concept of "embodied intelligence." Commentators on the event refer to China's leadership in the "humanoid race" thanks to $20 billion in government subsidies in the past year and plans to establish a 1 trillion yuan (~$137 billion) fund to support AI and robotics startups to boost the industry over the coming years.
